Prince George, the eldest son of Prince William and Princess Kate, is turning 12 this year. The royal family is preparing for a significant move, leaving their current residence in Windsor and moving into the historically significant Georgian mansion known as Forest Lodge.

Forest Lodge, originally named Holly Grove, was built between 1772 and 1782 by architect Thomas Sandby. The mansion features a distinctive nine-bay front with flanking wings, which remain key architectural elements today. John Deacon, who served as Groom of the Bedchamber to Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland, purchased the estate in 1772.

After being acquired by the Crown in 1829, Forest Lodge served as the residence of the Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park for many years. Notable tenants include Sir William Fremantle from 1830 to 1850. In 1937, the property's name was officially changed from Holly Grove to Forest Lodge on the suggestion of Edward VIII’s equerry, Sir John Reid.

The mansion boasts eight bedrooms, a chandelier-lit ballroom, tennis courts, and extensive grounds with cottages for staff such as security and nannies. It is Grade II-listed and part of the Crown Estate, remaining under King Charles III’s ownership. The Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to move into Forest Lodge by the end of 2025, seeking more privacy and space for their family near their children’s school.

Unlike some royal residences, William and Kate are personally funding renovations and paying rent for Forest Lodge. The royal couple plans to stay in Forest Lodge even after William's ascension to the throne, making it their "forever home."

Princess Charlotte, the couple's middle child, is 10 years old, and Prince Louis, their youngest, is 7. Princess Kate is 43 years old. The decision to move comes after three challenging years in Adelaide Cottage, which is located in Windsor. Both Kate and King Charles III received cancer diagnoses during the last three years.

The family is looking forward to their new beginning in Forest Lodge, a historically significant and beautifully designed mansion in Windsor Great Park.

The upcoming move of Prince William and Duchess Kate to Forest Lodge, a grand Georgian mansion located in Windsor Great Park, promises to reflect a new chapter in their lifestyle, as they seek a more private and spacious home-and-garden for their children, including Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The soon-to-be "forever home" for the prince and princess, Forest Lodge, boasts a rich history, having been originally named Holly Grove and built between 1772 and 1782.
