Parents seek implementation of 30mph speed limit near schools
In the picturesque town of Bispingen, concerns about road safety have been raised by two local mothers, Antonia Spille and Julie Kelling. The mothers have started a petition for a 30 km/h zone at the GOBS primary and secondary school and in the town centre, citing a series of safety issues.
Antonia Spille, a mother of two boys, has expressed her concern about the lack of school signs at bus stops and the lack of a 30 km/h zone. She has observed that children often push and shove at the road near bus stops, and the pedestrian crossing is often run over. Her older son is in the second grade, and her younger son will start school in the summer.
Julie Kelling, the mother of three children, has faced a similar issue. She has mentioned that there is an on-demand traffic light directly in front of the school that was out of order in January and was only repaired in February. Kelling finds it unacceptable that the traffic light was out of order for so long. Moreover, when reversing, the traffic light would turn red, but the truck driver could not see it, potentially causing danger to children. Two of Kelling's children already go to school and they walk to school from Steinkenhofen.
The initiative for a 30 km/h zone at the primary and secondary school and in the city centre of Bispingen was started by the municipality of Bispingen. However, the district has stated that the spot in front of the school is too short for a speed camera. Spille has faced a negative attitude from the district when inquiring about installing a speed camera.
The mothers have already collected 427 signatures digitally and aim for 500. The street's poor visibility can lead to misjudgments, potentially causing accidents. The mothers have extended the 30 km/h request to the town centre due to the street's curviness and poor visibility. In the past, there have been critical situations with the truck delivery traffic for the discount stores, and critical situations often occur at the height of the Edeka market due to pedestrians crossing the street between the car park and shops.
The mothers hope that their petition will lead to a safer environment for the children of Bispingen. They urge the district and the municipality to take their concerns seriously and to implement the 30 km/h zone as soon as possible.
