I received a drastic email once, filled with despair. A client hadn't printed her pictures, and I could sense the panic in her words. Her computer crashed, and she didn't backup her photos.
YOU GUESSED IT - HER WEDDING PICS!
For me, it was an easy peasy fix. Since I keep every pic I give to a client, I rebuilt her online gallery and sent her the new link. Now, what if this was ten years ago? She may have lost her images.
HER WEDDING PICS. GONE. FOREVER.
Nowadays, thanks to technology and social media, physical products' value has significantly decreased with millennials. We don't buy many prints anymore because we can just upload our snaps to Facebook, Insta, or put them on a USB drive. So, let's delve into why printing photos is vital, even in our tech-savvy era.
Will Social Media Last Forever?
One benefit of printing photos is security. It may seem strange, but what happens when Facebook fades out? Google+ flopped, Instagram isn't built for massive albums, and our 90s fave, MySpace, is long gone.
Even if Facebook lives for eternity (or so it seems), can you imagine searching through all your selfies from the past 30 years to find your wedding snaps? Imagine your kids looking for your wedding photos. Or your senior portraits? Do you want them rummaging through the same ol' stuff?
Why Print Photos? Because Technology Changes
Alright, say you downloaded your pics and backed them up on a USB stick or external drive. Good job! Let's look at the same situation 30 years later. "Geez, I lost that darn USB stick!" Or worse, "Shoot, I need an adapter, cause Apple's latest computers are incompatible with USB-A anymore!" Or even worse, "Oops, the drive is corrupted, and this was my only copy." This is why you should print your photos: they'll always be there, regardless of the time or tech.
The Appeal of Printing
Did you know what is hard to lose and makes photos look better with age? A printed photograph! People display photos and albums because they are a beautiful personal reminder and we enjoy showing off a bit to guests.
Come on, who misplaces a printed photo that got framed and hung up on the wall? Who loses a leather-bound book that sits on a coffee table to relive the tale of your WEDDING DAY? People throw out prints rarely; they lose them.
People hire photographers to record special moments. It's an investment, and so are physical print products. That's why printed photos matter. I don't want to hear from another client who lost their photos - it's a real heartbreaker. I can only imagine the terror they would experience too.
I'm not saying to print every single snap. Instead, find the ones that make you smile, and consider having a special place for them. Trust me; you'll thank yourself in a few decades.
