Photographer Rolf Nobel's 'Workers of the Sea' Highlights Precarious Livelihoods
Photographer Rolf Nobel has compiled a collection of images capturing the lives of sea-related workers from across four continents. Titled 'Workers of the Sea', the book features a diverse range of individuals whose livelihoods are increasingly under threat.
Rolf Nobel's fascination with the sea began in his youth, growing up in Hamburg. His father's work in the harbor further fuelled this interest in distant places. Over the years, Nobel has visited nearly 50 countries, capturing the essence of various 'workers of the sea'.
The book, 'Arbeiter des Meeres', showcases a variety of professions, from seacoalers in Britain to crab fishermen, lighthouse keepers, and even horse fishermen. Each image tells a story of a life deeply connected to the ocean, a relationship that is becoming increasingly precarious.
Rolf Nobel's 'Workers of the Sea' is a poignant reminder of the human connection to the ocean and the precarity of many livelihoods that depend on it. The book serves as a testament to the resilience and spirit of these workers, while also highlighting the urgent need for sustainability and protection of marine environments.
