"Positive developments within the Roma community: "Christ embraces and elevates us all""
In the Carpathian Basin and across Europe, the Hungarian Gypsy Missions International (HGMI) is making a significant impact on the lives of Roma communities. This organization, with a vision inspired by the book of Esther, focuses on spiritual, social, and cultural support for Hungarian-speaking Roma people.
HGMI's strategies are diverse and far-reaching. They organize forums and conferences to facilitate knowledge-sharing among professionals and ministers, establish new foundations and online platforms for effective collaboration, and run targeted programs like "Well in Spirit" to equip young people with life skills and spiritual growth. They also support education within Roma communities and promote cultural preservation by championing Roma traditions.
The organization's work extends beyond spiritual renewal to practical social support. HGMI provides community services, runs local NGOs, and offers educational and aid programs. In conflict-affected areas, they help Roma families avoid displacement, preserving community cohesion.
HGMI's impact is not limited to the spiritual realm. By addressing social issues such as poverty, war-related displacement, and marginalization, they indirectly influence local politics. For instance, in Transcarpathia, they help Roma families stay in their homes during times of conflict.
Albert Durkó, HGMI's president, emphasizes the need for unity and collaboration across borders and ministries to maximize impact. He encourages the wider Church to stand with and partner with Roma people, speaking up for them when they are attacked, and providing character references for individuals who face discrimination in the job market.
Despite prejudice against Roma people, which is still prevalent in local communities, HGMI's work is having a significant impact across Hungary. However, HGMI uses secular vocabulary to describe their work, such as mentoring, training, and community transformation, to appeal to a broader audience.
In a recent article published in Evangelical Focus, Julia Doxat-Purser, socio-political representative of the European Evangelical Alliance, highlights the importance of HGMI's work. She notes that the people who are most turning to the Lord are gypsies and immigrants.
Despite the challenges, HGMI remains committed to its vision. They aim to prepare for a widespread revival among the Roma, with the hope that the Roma community will give the example for others to follow, shame worldly thinking, and show and share God's light so that many will turn to Christ. Albert Durkó believes that investing in Roma ministry could potentially yield the biggest return in the Kingdom of God.
