Refreshed Mantel Clock Case - A New Look for Your Timepiece
A Restored HAC Clock: A Piece of History in the Making
In the heart of a workshop, a unique clock stands proudly on a workbench. This is no ordinary timepiece; it's a HAC clock, a gem from the Hamburg Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik, a German clock company that was later absorbed by Junghans.
The clock, estimated to date between 1900 and 1908, is the first of its kind in the author's collection. While the exact production year remains uncertain, the clock's age gives it a certain charm and historical significance.
The HAC clock, a specific type of mantel or parlour clock, boasts an 8-day time and strike mechanism, as indicated by a plaque on its base. Over the years, it has shown visible signs of wear, with scratch marks on the dial surround and noticeable wear on the bottom corners, the lower part of the columns, and column capitals. However, these imperfections have been carefully addressed during the restoration process.
The case of the clock was cleaned with Murphy's soap, followed by two coats of shellac and a coat of Minwax finishing wax, giving it a fresh and polished look. The dial, too, has been cleaned and touched up, with the numbers and chapter ring restored to their original glory. Yet, the clock has not been fully restored to its original condition, maintaining a charm that only comes with age and history.
Despite the wear, it's not severe enough to justify removing the finish. The clock, while not perfect, has been improved and now stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of the past.
As for where the restored clock will find its new home, that remains to be seen. The author is currently contemplating the best place to showcase this piece of history.
For those interested in learning more about HAC clocks produced during the 1900–1908 period, specialized horology or antique clock references would be recommended. These resources can provide further specific historical details and catalogues, offering a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship and industrial techniques that went into the production of these timeless pieces.
The restored HAC clock, a treasure from the past, blends seamlessly with the author's vintage collection, enriching their lifestyle with a touch of history. As its new home awaits, it serves as a conversation piece in the realm of fashion-and-beauty and home-and-garden enthusiasts, drawing admiration for its aged charm and unique craftsmanship.
