A Tale of a Design Maven: Danielle Podeszek

Revitalizing Outdoor Spaces with Retro Bold Styles

Hailing from the windswept city of Buffalo, Danielle Podeszek is an accomplished designer and the mastermind behind Pod Design Shop. With over a decade under her belt, she's made a name for herself in the realm of logo design, apparel, and merchandise, particularly for outdoor and athletic brands. Her unique approach, a potent mix of bold colors, retro influences, and modern functionality, has earned her a place in the design world.

Rising Through the Ranks on Dribbble

Back in her college days, a classmate introduced Danielle to the then invite-only platform, Dribbble. Fast forward to today, and Dribbble remains a cornerstone of her career, shaping her design style and putting her in touch with clients. During her stint with the renowned Buffalo Bills football team, Danielle used the platform to publish personal and side projects, allowing her to build a portfolio that truly reflected her passions and proficiencies. As she ventured into freelancing, Dribbble proved to be the perfect arena to feature her work and secure clients, from logos to merchandise designs.

A Style All Her Own

Danielle prides herself on her distinct style, a hallmark that sets her apart from her peers. "I focus on what I know I'm good at and what I like," she said, embodying a conviction that resonates with budding designers. Known for her vibrant colors, daring design choices, and retro inspirations, her work is captivating and timeless. Her design philosophy, rooted in creating work that is bold, eye-catching, and enduring, encourages designers to embrace their strengths and create work that resonates with their ideal clients.

Fusing Design and Connections on Dribbble

Dribbble has played a pivotal role in Danielle's ability to forge connections with ideal clients. "Dribbble really helped me focus my approach. I stopped posting random work and instead, I focused on posting the type of designs I wanted to pursue," she remarked. By tailoring her posts to her desired niche, she was able to draw in clients from the outdoor and athletic sectors more effectively.

Danielle credits Dribbble for being a dependable source of leads compared to platforms like Instagram, especially given the unpredictable nature of social media algorithms. "I've had better luck getting clients through Dribbble now. The platform's SEO and the ability to search by design type really help," she added.

The design-centric essence of the Dribbble community is another feature that sets it apart from social media platforms. "It's nice to follow designers I admire, and I love how it's purely design-focused," she says, appreciating the simplicity of staying inspired and up-to-date with design trends while engaging with like-minded creatives.

Drawing Inspiration from Nature and Problems

For Danielle, inspiration comes from both the natural world and the design process. "The outdoors is always a huge influence. I also love taking photos of old logos, fonts, and wordmarks in thrift stores. The character in those designs really sparks my creativity," she explains, explaining the dual sources of her inspiration. This deep connection to the outdoors permeates her designs, making her work relatable to some of her key clients, mostly trail and outdoor brands.

Regardless of the project, Danielle approaches each with a problem-solving mindset. "I think of every project as a challenge to make something new out of an idea. Let yourself get inspired by your clients' briefs. An easy thing to do if you work on projects you're passionate about," she advises.

Building a Reputation with Authentic Projects

One of the most rewarding aspects of Danielle's career is how her work has evolved through her interests and passions. "I've worked on many projects that align with my love for the outdoors, which makes the work feel even more meaningful," she shares, reflecting on her successful projects. A standout example is her design exercise, creating retro and "outdoorsy" badges for The North Face, a testimony to her knack for capturing a brand's essence in a memorable design.

Danielle continues to express her creative vision through her independent t-shirt business, even using it to create online listings for her work on Dribbble. "Keywords are really important. I use them to attract the clients who are looking for designs that speak to their specific needs, like 'trail runner design' or 'race medal design'," she explains, emphasizing the importance of search engine optimization in her success.

Guidance for Aspiring Designers

Looking ahead, Danielle encourages budding designers to "do the projects that excite you. Fill your portfolio with work that aligns with your style, and don't be afraid to create mock designs if the right clients aren't coming your way yet." By sticking to this strategy, she has found new opportunities and collaborations, allowing her to delve deeper into creative work while minimizing marketing efforts.
