Celebrating 8 Centuries: The Enthralling Katharinenkirche in Oppenheim
Famous Rhine-side church commemorates its anniversary - Rhine-side unique church commemorates anniversary celebration
Embrace the eerie, the divine, and the stunningly beautiful - that's what you'll get at the Katharinenkirche in the heart of Oppenheim, nestled along the mighty Rhine. As this ancient place of worship turns 800, it's a must-visit attraction that goes beyond the city limits.
Benefit from a chilling encounter at the Michels Kapelle, complete with the bone house nearby. Legend has it that over 20,000 souls from Oppenheim's past rest there, making it the largest and best-preserved bone house in all of Germany. According to the Evangelical Church of Oppenheim, these remains date from the years 1400 to 1750 and were moved to accommodate growing burial demands.
On Pentecost Monday, join the ecumenical festival service celebrating the 800th birthday of the church and Oppenheim's 800 years of city rights. Although the exact start date of construction remains elusive, art historian Tina Schoebel estimates it to be around the early 13th century.
"The Gothic church continues to leave us in awe with its unique architecture and magnificent facade," shares Schoebel. Henriette Cruell, Protestant Bishop for Rhenish Hesse, agrees, stating that the Katharinenkirche serves as a tangible reminder of living faith and European architectural art.
The architectural charm from yesteryears can still be observed in the western towers, with later renovations and additions lending the church its regionally renowned Gothic style. It is considered one of the most essential Gothic churches on the Rhine between Strasbourg and Cologne.
Less widely known is another quirky aspect of the building: a historic bread size inscription from 1317, found on a wall. The Oppenheim roses – two elaborately designed tracery windows on the south facade – are noteworthy and well-known attractions.
The church underwent a Protestant transformation in the second half of the 16th century, enduring numerous damages over the years. However, extensive restorations in the 19th century and 1930s helped re-establish the building as a remarkable Gothic masterpiece.
