Ripple Greenway: 1.3km Walking & Cycling Route Opens in Barking & Dagenham
A new 1.3km walking and cycling route, the Ripple Greenway, is under construction in Barking and Dagenham. The project, a collaboration between the local community and the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust London, aims to enhance and maintain waterways, open up underused green space, and provide safer paths to school. It has received over £440k in funding.
The Ripple Greenway will connect the River Thames at Barking Riverside to Barking town centre. It will offer greater access to nature, away from busy roads, and provide natural play features, a community orchard, seating areas, and improved wildlife habitats. Trees for Cities and local volunteers will plant trees in the park over the winter.
Matt Winfield, director of Walk Wheel Cycle Trust London, expressed excitement about the project's progress. Councillor Cameron Geddes praised the collaboration with the trust and the community in creating the greenway. The project received match funding from the Mayor of London's Green Capital Grant and Barking Riverside Ltd.
The Ripple Greenway, set to open up underused green space and link communities in the Thames Ward area, is expected to benefit residents by providing safer paths to school and greater access to nature. The project, which began with community collaboration and received substantial funding, is on track to enhance and maintain the waterways within the park.
