Showcasing Artistic Flair: Halifax Mural Festival Infuses City with a Splash of Colour
The Halifax Mural Festival, a celebration of creativity, public art, and neighbourhood pride, returns this summer to transform blank urban walls into vibrant works of art. The event, organized by the Quinpool Road Mainstreet District Association, is scheduled to take place from approximately July 5th to July 8th in 2025.
The festival attracts a diverse group of artists, including internationally recognized figures like King Kayo, who headlined the event in 2022 after a breakout year of awards. This year, the festival expands on an already impressive legacy of nearly 40 murals along Quinpool Road.
One of the festival's major locations is Quinpool Road, where a significant mural installation is planned at 6408 Quinpool Road, at the intersection with Oxford Street. Family-friendly entertainment such as face-painting, balloon twisting, and street activations by participating businesses are part of The Big Reveal Day, which takes place on Saturday during the festival.
The Halifax Mural Festival is more than just a week-long event; it's a collaborative spirit that involves both local and visiting artists who work together to add colour and vibrancy to Halifax’s urban landscape. By partnering with other summer events such as the Gottigen Street Festival and Unity Fest, the Mural Festival contributes to Halifax’s reputation as a lively, arts-focused destination during the summer months.
Karla Nicholson, the executive director of the Quinpool Road Mainstreet District Association, looks forward to the festival each year. She explains, "The Halifax Mural Festival is an incredible opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the power of art in public spaces. We're excited to see the transformative impact it will have on Quinpool Road once again."
Other mural locations for the Halifax Mural Festival this year include Freeman's Little New York, Gaudet Optical, Organic Earth Market, and the West End Baptist Church. The festival concludes with The Big Reveal Day on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., giving the public a chance to witness the artists in action as they create their works of art.
