Art of Seeing: A Retrospective Celebration of Wim Wenders' Multifaceted Artistry

A major exhibition, titled "W.I.M. THE ART OF SEEING," is set to open at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn on August 1, 2025, marking the occasion of filmmaker and artist Wim Wenders' 80th birthday. The exhibition runs until January 11, 2026, offering a comprehensive survey of Wenders' artistic oeuvre, including his films, photographs, collages, drawings, polaroids, and 'electronic paintings.'

The exhibition, curated in cooperation with the DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum and supported by Wim Wenders Stiftung and other collaborators, aims to explore Wenders as a "traveller and only then as a director or photographer." It presents a unique opportunity to delve into the diversity and depth of his visual storytelling across still and moving images.

Highlights of the exhibition include iconic film scenes, storyboards, props, behind-the-scenes material, and a large immersive cinematographic installation equipped with state-of-the-art image and sound technology. Wim Wenders himself narrates an audio guide, providing insights and context to the exhibits, making the experience more intimate and revealing.

Wim Wenders, who lives near Berlin, has recently changed his sleep pattern. The change, however, does not seem to have affected his work in the film industry, as he remains globally recognized for films like "Buena Vista Social Club," "Paris, Texas," and "Wings of Desire." The change was not caused by a health issue or treatment, and Wenders expressed this to the German Press Agency.

Interestingly, Wenders has revealed that he made the change because he loves how the world looks in the mornings. Each season offers a unique view for Wenders, and he enjoys waking up and looking out the window to imagine the day as it begins. From his residence, Wenders has a wide view of the landscape, which he finds inspiring.

After its run in Bonn, a reimagined version of the exhibition will travel to Frankfurt’s DFF museum in 2026. This exhibition is a deeply immersive homage to Wenders’ multifaceted artistry in cinema and visual arts, emphasizing his unique “art of seeing.”
