Transform Scraps and Store-Bought Produce into Thriving Kitchen Garden: A Guide to Regrowing Leftovers

In the quest for sustainability and self-sufficiency, Armen Adamjan, author of the popular books "Don't Throw it Out" (editions one and two), offers a unique solution: a no-waste kitchen garden. This innovative approach encourages the regrowth, repurposing, and reuse of everyday kitchen waste.

Armen Adamjan's course, "Grow a No-Waste Kitchen Garden", is designed to teach creative ways to reduce household waste while keeping plants happy and healthy. Participants can learn fun and simple methods to regrow many favourite store-bought produce, from green onions to avocado trees, and even pineapples and ginger.

Regrowing Green Onions

To regrow green onions, simply chop the top off one or two inches above the roots and place the roots in a cup of shallow water. Change the water daily, and in a week or two, new green onions will grow. Alternatively, they can be planted in a pot of soil and cut the tops off whenever needed.

Growing a Pineapple

A pineapple top can be used to grow a new pineapple. After twisting the top off a pineapple, let it air dry for two days, then twist it into a pot of soil and water it well. Place the pineapple top in a sunny spot and water it once a week. In time, it will sprout a stem and start to grow its own mini pineapple.

Growing an Avocado Tree

To grow an avocado tree from the pit, remove the pit from the avocado, rinse it, soak it in water for an hour, stick three toothpicks in it in the shape of a triangle, and rest it on a cup of water so just the flat bottom is submerged. Leave the avocado pit in a warm and bright area. Change the water daily until the pit grows a few leaves. Once the seed has sprouted a few leaves, transplant it into a pot with the seed resting above the soil.

Regrowing Ginger

Ginger can also be regrown from kitchen scraps. Simply save a small piece of ginger with some roots attached, place it in a pot of soil, and water it well. Keep it in a warm and bright area, and in no time, you'll have new ginger growing.

Bok Choy

Bok Choy can also be regrown from kitchen scraps. Cut off the base of the bok choy, place it in a pot of water, and change the water daily. In a few days, new leaves will start to grow.
