Designer Emily Rickard Transforms Small Bathroom into a Boutique Spa Haven

Interior designer Emily Rickard has recently completed a renovation of a small bathroom in her home, creating a luxurious and relaxing space that evokes the feeling of a sunny holiday haze.

The bathroom design features a neutral-toned KAST concrete basin, paired with patterned encaustic cement tiles on the floors. Handmade natural tiles from Bert & May were used for the bathroom tiles, adding a touch of warmth and texture.

Emily Rickard purposefully sought out sustainable materials for the renovation, incorporating second-hand, vintage, and reused pieces. A vintage reclaimed chest of drawers now serves as storage under the basin, while the existing shelving above the toilet was re-used.

To ensure natural light and air, Emily Rickard added a rooflight to the bathroom. She also brought a biophilic touch to the space with a hanging plant and eucalyptus, adding a relaxing aroma to the room.

The shower area was designed with a built-in marble shower bench and a mix of three types of bathroom tile: marble, bejmat, and encaustic. The bejmat tiles and marble were used to create a textured, luxurious look in the shower.

Inspiration for the bathroom design came from Emily Rickard's love of Mallorcan and Ibizan color palettes, combined with Moroccan textures. Warm tones, rich textures, natural materials, and a subtle, refined approach to color are present throughout the space.

Despite its small size, the bathroom design shows how a luxurious shower can be achieved, even without a freestanding tub. Emily Rickard's innovative use of materials and sustainable design practices demonstrate her commitment to creating beautiful and eco-friendly spaces.

Emily Rickard is based in Bristol, but works on commercial styling projects and residential design projects in the UK, US, and beyond. Her work is characterised by her ability to create unique and inviting spaces that reflect the personality and style of her clients.
