Winnipeg's Alexander Docks to be Transformed into a Lush Urban Oasis

After sitting idle since 2015, the former Alexander Docks in Winnipeg are set for a significant transformation. The redevelopment project, valued at $10.8 million, will see the dock area transformed into a vibrant riverside park, offering a variety of recreational spaces for the community to enjoy.

The redevelopment team, led by The Forks Foundation, is focused on creating a lush urban oasis that will cater to the needs of the people. The new park will feature seating terraces, picnic groves, a deck, and an edible "Giving Garden" to encourage community interaction and enjoyment.

Water activities enthusiasts will also have facilities to look forward to, with a new dock for canoes, kayaks, and other watercraft, and a new summer waterbus stop to connect the area with other parts of the riverfront.

The memorial dedicated to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people will be preserved in the new park. This decision was made following consultations with family members and community advocates to ensure a respectful space for remembrance and ceremony.

The park's design will also focus on accessibility and public safety, with improved lighting and enhanced connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, linking it to Stephen Juba Park and South Point Douglas.

Mayor Scot Gillingham has expressed confidence that The Forks will do the same with the new park at the Alexander Docks, as they have a history of developing and managing outstanding public spaces. He stated that the project will restore beauty and joy to the waterfront, turning "a place for people, a lush urban oasis for everyone."

The Forks' president and CEO, Sara Stasik, shared similar sentiments, expressing that the project aims to restore communal connection to the former industrial dock space by transforming it into an inclusive, multifunctional greenspace along Winnipeg’s riverfront.

The announcement for the plans was made by The Forks on Thursday. Funding for the redevelopment is coming from both public and private sources, with the initiative reflecting a community-driven vision built on extensive public consultation dating back to 2016.

With these plans in place, the Alexander Docks are set to become one of Winnipeg's great riverfront parks, offering a lush urban oasis for the community to enjoy. It's not just a rebuilt dock, but a completely new park that promises to bring beauty, joy, and communal connection to the former industrial dock space.
