Let's Get Involved: Your Guide to the Munich Budget
Urban Renewal Project: Opportunity for Munich Residents to Contribute Towards Their Own City Goals, With a Million Euro Up For Grabs
Wanna make a difference in your city, Munich dwellers? Here's your chance! The Munich Budget, a new initiative by the local government, is all about giving you a voice in shaping the city's future. But remember, there are a few rules to follow.
What is the Munich Budget?
The Munich Budget, first introduced in 2021, calls for one million euros from the city council to fund ideas from citizens like you. Munich's bustling spirit and the creativity of its people are what the city council aims to champion, as Mayor Dieter Reiter explains, "Munich is a dynamic city that thrives on its people's diversity and creativity."
Getting involved is as easy as pie – anyone aged 14 and above residing in Munich can partake. Younger participants can join in through their guardians or legal representatives to share their visions for the city.
How can you get involved?
To get started, you'll need to register on the online platform unser.muenchen.de. Additionally, proposal cards can be submitted at various city libraries, but you'll have to drop them into an designated suggestion box. The deadline for submissions is June 9, with the city administration reviewing eligible ideas by mid-June.
From June 17 to 30, it's time to vote for your top picks! And here’s the best part – you don't have to have submitted a proposal yourself to cast a ballot.
The responsible departments will then create a cost and implementation plan for the top 20 most popular proposals. The second round of voting takes place between October 15 and October 31. After the winners are announced in November, implementation begins as early as January 2026.
Guidelines for Submitting Ideas:
- Eligibility: Residents of Munich aged 14 and above, along with international residents, are encouraged to participate.
- Languages: Ideas can be proposed in German or English.
- Project Scope: Proposals can range from infrastructure improvements, like public restrooms or parks, to cultural projects, such as outdoor libraries or street art.
- Cost Limitation: Each project proposal shouldn’t exceed 100,000 euros.
- Protection of Conservation Areas: Proposals must not disturb conservation zones.
- Employment Impact: Projects shouldn’t require permanent hires by the city.
- Deadline: Ideas must be submitted by June 9, 2025.
Other Fun Facts:
- This three-year long initiative takes cues from similar participatory budgeting models seen in cities such as Paris and Barcelona.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your ideas and let's shape Munich together! Remember, it's the residents' creativity and engagement that power this process, so we need YOU!
