Village Transformation Project Underway
The picturesque town of Periana is set for a significant change, as a new planning document is set to reshape its landscape and infrastructure. This new consultation will give Periana's residents another opportunity to help shape the future of their town.
The planning document, drafted by the Malaga Provincial Council, aims to redefine urban boundaries, identify rural habitats, and designate municipal plots for parks, open spaces, and public facilities. The objective is to bring Periana in line with 21st-century needs, focusing on flexibility, simplicity, and community focus.
The current urban plan for Periana dates back to 1997, with the last major update in 2013. However, this new document promises a strategic step toward rebalancing the territory and adapting the town's growth to current social and environmental realities.
Community participation was a significant part of the drafting process. Local landowners from each of the 14 rural hamlets within the municipality contributed ideas, ensuring that the needs and concerns of the community are addressed in the plan.
The planning document was shaped using GIS technology, providing a detailed and accurate representation of the town's current state and potential future developments. The deputy for Public Works and Infrastructure, Nieves Atencia, delivered the plan to mayor Meritxell Vizuete, who will be responsible for its implementation.
Once the draft secures initial approval, a new round of public and technical consultation will open. This second public consultation will provide an opportunity for further refinement of the plan based on feedback from the community. The environmental review process for the draft has already begun, with the aim of assessing the plan's impact on the local environment and biodiversity.
Once finalised, the new planning document will mark a new era for Periana, transforming its rural hamlets and ensuring a sustainable and community-focused future for this charming Andalusian town. Stay tuned for updates on the consultation process and the progress of the new urban plan for Periana.
