Weekly Mobility Event in Leipzig - Pedestrian-Only Sunday, Community Gathering, and Roadside Education
Leipzig, Germany is gearing up for its European Mobility Week, an event aimed at promoting sustainable and active mobility. The week-long celebration begins on Saturday at 10 AM, with the starting point at the Messe turnaround next to the city library.
On Saturday, Mayor Thomas Dienberg invites interested parties to discuss Leipzig's mobility strategy. Additionally, a green-themed tram ride is on offer, organized by Mayor Dienberg and public transport operators.
The highlight of the week, however, is the car-free Sunday on 13th September. Several streets in the city, including Windmühlenstraße, Grünwaldstraße, and the street in front of the city library, will be closed to car traffic. The event will take place from 11 AM to 7 PM on Hildegardstraße, where a street school will be held.
The street school will focus on topics such as biodiversity and regional food supply. Meanwhile, various initiatives and clubs will take over these car-free streets. 'Leipzig radelt', for instance, will offer bike tours, while the 'Jugendclub' will host music and games for youth. 'Umweltfreunde Leipzig' will provide environmental information and workshops.
The Leipzig Citizens' Foundation also invites people to a picnic on Sunday. Moreover, the Leipzig Transport Authority will provide information about the Germany ticket on the same day.
For those who wish to participate in the car-free Sunday, the organizers encourage all Leipzig residents to leave their cars at home for the day.
