Wesel District's plea for 'Maintain Distance' during the European Mobility Week

The district of Wesel, located in Germany, is taking a proactive approach to road safety, particularly when it comes to overtaking cyclists. Since 2023, the district, along with the municipalities and the police headquarters, have been committed to raising awareness about the importance of maintaining proper distances when overtaking cyclists.

This initiative, known as the "Keep Your Distance!" campaign, has been a consistent focus for the district. In urban areas, a distance of 1.5 meters should be maintained when overtaking cyclists, while outside of urban areas, a distance of two meters is required. This campaign aims to promote fair coexistence among different road users and ensure the safety of all.

The district, in collaboration with the municipalities and the police headquarters, have been using clear posters and banners to draw attention to these distance regulations. These visual aids have been displayed in both May and September, reinforcing the message of the campaign.

During the European Mobility Week 2025, which will take place from September 16th to 22nd, the district of Wesel will continue to emphasise the importance of these regulations. The responsibility for organising such cooperative initiatives lies primarily with the Kreis Wesel administration and its related local mobility or traffic safety authorities.

If it is not possible to maintain these distances, overtaking is prohibited (§ 5 StVO). The municipalities in the district of Wesel have been actively promoting these regulations since 2023, and the district, in conjunction with the municipalities and the police headquarters, have been focusing on the "Keep Your Distance!" campaign in their efforts to promote road safety for cyclists.

By participating in the European Mobility Week, the district of Wesel is demonstrating its commitment to promoting a safer and more sustainable mode of transportation. The "Keep Your Distance!" action is just one of the ways in which the district is working towards this goal.
