Workshop on Traditional Japanese Woodcraft with Skilled Artisan Yuta Shimizu
In the heart of Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, lies a centuries-old tradition known as Yosegi Zaiku. This intricate marquetry craft, with roots dating back to the late Edo period (early 19th century), has been celebrated for over 200 years for its beauty and functionality[1].
Born in Tokyo in 1980, Yuta Shimizu first encountered Yosegi Zaiku during a trip to Hakone in 2001. The craft, which involves creating intricate mosaic patterns by combining over 50 types of natural hardwoods into detailed geometric designs, captivated his imagination[1]. After graduating from Tokyo City University in 2002, Shimizu joined Kanazashi Woodcraft Co., Ltd., led by master artisan Katsuhiro Kanazashi[2].
In 2005, Shimizu participated in the launch of Zōki-Bayashi, a collective of young Yosegi Zaiku artisans[2]. His works, characterized by their vibrant colours and innovative designs, soon began to gain recognition both in Japan and abroad. Shimizu started showcasing his works overseas, including at Milan Design Week and Maison&Objet Paris[3].
Since 2011, Shimizu has been creating works that shine a new light on Hakone Yosegi Zaiku in his independent studio, Luthier. The multi-colored wood pieces, representative of the diversity of trees in the Hakone area, are a testament to the craft's rich history[3].
The exhibition, JAPAN 47 ARTISANS, is offering introductory level Yosegi Zaiku workshops and demonstrations with artisan Yuta Shimizu. Participants in these workshops will create a personal work of Yosegi-art by combining individual small, natural colored pieces of wood[4]. All materials for the workshop will be provided.
Yosegi Zaiku's motifs and style have also inspired modern design products, such as Yosegi-themed playing cards[5]. This blend of ancient artistry with contemporary forms continues to attract tourists and artisans alike who visit workshops in Hakone to see and learn the traditional techniques firsthand[2][4].
Yosegi Zaiku pieces are prized as refined gifts, collectible art, and cultural heritage symbols showcasing Japan’s enduring woodworking tradition[1][2]. As a quintessential example of Japanese craftsmanship, Yosegi Zaiku remains highly significant both culturally and economically in Hakone[2].
