Yearly Invitation for Community Participation: 26th Salmon River Fish Hatchery Open House Hosted by DEC
The 26th annual Salmon River Fish Hatchery Open House, hosted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), is set to take place on Saturday, September 27. This event, celebrating National Hunting and Fishing Day designated by Congress in 1972, will occur from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Salmon River Fish Hatchery, located at 2133 County Route 22, Altmar, Oswego County.
The hatchery, open to the public for daily self-guided tours from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in April through November, will offer guided tours during the open house, providing behind-the-scenes access to the hatchery's operations.
Inside the auditorium, attendees can practice tying flies for fishing and participate in air archery. Outside, youth can learn how to cast a fishing rod. Multiple conservation organizations, outdoor recreation groups, and fishing and hunting clubs will share displays and lead activities at the event.
Guests can observe migrating salmon by visiting the outside fish observation decks, which are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. The Salmon River supports a world-class fishery for migrating Lake Ontario trout and salmon.
For more information about the Salmon River's management and restoration plans, visit DEC's website. The area offers hiking trails, including a short quarter-mile accessible crushed stone trail leading to two observation points for a 110-foot waterfall.
Visitors are encouraged to view New York fish in the hatchery's indoor aquaria to learn about other fish species. For questions about the salmon fish ladder open house, contact Betsy Ukeritis, DEC Environmental Educator, at 315-314-0768.
It is important to note that the Lower Fly Fishing Section is currently closed due to low water flows. The event is free and open to the public.
